Broken Finger

Sept. 1982

I had ridden in my grandfather's 1941 Chrysler since I was born. It became my car when he died in 1970, and I drove it around Manhattan. In September 1982, returning home from Danceteria at 5:30 AM, I crashed into a NYFD engine speeding down Broadway at 9th St. The lateral force spun the 18-inch steering wheel, twisting my hand and producing a spiral fracture in the third finger. Setting the bone required the insertion of three metal pins for several weeks, shown below.
